Because there are so many facets that make up the game, mistakes can be difficult to define. To generalize mistakes, think of them as any move that is not considered the best. Not all hands in poker are simplistic; therefore, you need to figure out what situations will earn you the most money and what situations won’t.
What You Should Search For
When the hand you have played has given you a negative outcome, you probably realize that you have messed up. The problem with trying to figure out where you went wrong is that you have no idea what hand your competitor had, much less what was going through their head.
Because you cannot possibly rely on memory alone, write down the aspects surrounding the hand you made a mistake on, such as the odds, betting habits, et cetera. This is your best bet in fixing your mistakes.
Why Was Your Move A Mistake?
Now that you know how you made a mistake, you need to understand why it was a mistake in the first place. All of the notes you wrote down will not do you a bit of good if you do not use that information. So replay the move in your head and come up with a better solution; this will benefit you in future games.
One word of caution: only fix what is bad; leave your good moves alone. If a play works, do not worry about perfecting it. Focus your energy on failed plays instead. In order to be a top-notch player, having some strong skills will not be enough; your entire skill set needs to be excellent.
